Remeha brings creature comforts to Bristol Zoo’s gorilla family
Remeha boilers are bringing energy saving comfort and warmth to some of our closest living relatives in the animal world: the gorillas at Bristol Zoo. An impressive £1million project has been carried out to more than double the space previously enjoyed by the Zoo’s growing family of western lowland gorillas by refurbishing and extending their Grade II listed Gorilla House.
The new transformed enclosure, comprising the gorillas’ sleeping area, their internal play area and the new visitors’ walkway, is heated by a combination of underfloor heating, radiant panels and tubular heaters, all fed by a Remeha Quinta Pro 65 condensing boiler. This replaces the existing heating plant to comply with the BREEAM standards of the new Gorilla House. Andy Murray, Contract Manager at Priddy Engineering specified the Quinta Pro for its high efficiencies and ultra-low carbon and NOx emissions, and for its compact dimensions and ability to be wall hung.
“Space was at a premium during the retrofitting process as we had to fit the new boiler before removing the existing plant,” commented Andy Murray. “There was in fact an additional deciding factor,” he added. “Ease of installation was an essential criterion in the specification process. The priority throughout this project has been the wellbeing of the gorillas who have stayed in the enclosure while the refurbishment work has been carried out around them. Being able to fit the new boiler quickly and quietly has meant that the gorillas have been able to stay in their familiar surroundings without any unwanted or unnecessary stress.”
The Remeha Quinta Pro range of fully modulating compact condensing boilers offers outputs from 8-114 kW, high efficiencies of 108.9% NCV ∆T 50/30ºC and ultra-low NOx emissions. They are designed for easy and flexible installation for single or multiple configurations, and can be wall hung or installed free standing on a suitable frame, with the added options of skid mounted systems and cascade packages.
Bristol Zoo is a registered charity and the transformation of the Gorilla House has been made possible with the help of charitable donations. Remeha Commercial is delighted to have been involved in this project.
