Remeha boilers bring down the house at Somerset theatre

The Octagon Theatre in Yeovil, Somerset, is enjoying energy-efficient, low carbon and NOx heating thanks to Remeha boilers.

Comfort and warmth are paramount for the enjoyment of theatregoers, so when the existing oil-fired boiler began to fail, South Somerset District Council appointed Consultant Engineer Mike Slade of Slade Associates to design a replacement boiler plant. “Alongside reliability, a key objective for the Council was to improve the energy efficiency of the heating at the theatre, thereby reducing carbon emissions and energy consumption,” said Mr Slade.

To meet the Council’s brief for affordable, greener heating, a new gas-fired plant was specified using two Remeha Gas 310 Eco Pro 6-section gas condensing boilers to replace the oil boiler. “We have used Remeha on several projects and have been impressed with the reliability of their heating products and the excellent service they provide,” added Mr Slade.

The plant room at The Octagon Theatre is located in the basement of the building with narrow access. A major benefit of the Remeha Gas 310 Eco Pro range is that it can be disassembled into three sections for just such a situation. This factor proved highly beneficial at The Octagon, allowing the two boilers to be disassembled prior to entering the plant room where they were reassembled and installed by Watertite Heating building services engineers.

“We have a good relationship with Remeha and have enjoyed our many projects together over the years,” commented Julian Newbury, Director of Watertite Heating.

Back at The Octagon, with a new gas main, new flues, new expansion vessels, a new primary pump and even a new lick of paint in the boiler room, the gas-fired system is now fully operational and delivering agreeable warmth throughout the building, from backstage to the bar.

The Remeha boilers are fully modulating and sequence controlled from the BMS for maximum operational efficiency. With a new control panel and updated BMS linking both to the theatre network and to the offices of South Somerset Council, staff can control the heating and monitor the energy and carbon savings delivered by the Remeha boilers, which are anticipated to be significant.
