THE JOHNNIE JOHNSON HOUSING ASSOCIATION

Remeha supplied Gas 210 boilers to a retirement housing scheme, ‘The Bury’, comprising of a 16th Century manor house with 1980s annex, owned and run by Johnnie Johnson Housing Association (JJHA).

‘The Bury’ at Bury Lane, Codicote in Hertfordshire,  underwent a complete transformation last year. The retirement home was opened back in 1980 by wartime hero Sir Douglas Bader, a member of the original voluntary Committee of Management for the JJHA and close friend of ‘Johnnie’ Johnson, to provide much needed housing for vulnerable elderly people in the area.

The Gas 210 ECO MKII floor standing boilers were supplied by Remeha and had to overcome flueing problems and conservation issues surrounding the older part of the building. The flue should have gone up where the satellite dish is positioned but JJHA could not get consent from the council, so the flue had to run through the underside of the building and out via the opposite elevation.

The boilers are highly efficient (110% NCV at 10/30°C – 99% GVC) with ultra low NOx emissions. Remeha also provided other boilers from their range for the project – JJHA believe that the exceptional efficiency of the boilers contributes to huge savings being made on fuel consumption of the completed projects.

Peter Jordan, Maintenance Surveyor of JJHA, was extremely pleased with the results and commented that “an excellent job was undertaken by both Remeha and Bancroft Plumbing & Heating both on the finished works and the overcoming of major flue problems resulting in providing a first class heating and hot water system and a major cost saving for our residents.”

The JJHA is a charitable status Housing Association operating throughout Northern England to provide comfortable, affordable homes for families, single people and retired persons. James Edgar ‘Johnnie’ Johnson was a highly decorated Royal Air Force pilot, a wartime hero who was the highest scoring RAF fighter pilot to survive the war. Johnnie Johnson formed the Trust in 1969 and gave it his own name, endowing it with his own brand of enthusiasm, energy and courage, and adding the intensely personal style which he then embodied as its leader for the next 20 years.

Remeha was delighted to be involved in such a historically significant and community supportive project.
