poor quality water can lead to corrosion and lime scale deposits, reducing the efficiency of the boiler and unnecessarily increasing running costs and emissions.

Most of us are aware that calcium content in water can cause limescale, but this is just one of many factors that can affect the performance of a heating system.
Water quality can also be affected by:

  • Oxygen
  • Chlorides
  • Minerals
  • Sludge and debris
  • PH
  • Our advice is to check the quality of the water before topping up the system and avoid topping up more than 5% of the installation's water content in any one year.

On both new and existing applications, we recommend thoroughly flushing the system before installing the boiler. The full process can be found in our water quality treatment document. You can also get specialist advice on water treatment from reputable manufacturers. Reputable manufacturers and their products include Sentinel Performance Solution Ltd and Fernox. Products from other manufacturers may also be used, provided that the relevant manufacturer guarantees that they are suitable for all materials used and are corrosion-resistant.

Members of the Industrial and Commercial Energy Association (ICOM) have worked together to write a Water Treatment and Conditioning Guide, based on the problems that boilers and other heating system components face due to poor water conditions.
