Remeha boilers at Macauley Hall at Leeds Beckett University’s Headingley Campus

Macauley Hall, a Grade II-listed educational building on Leeds Beckett University’s Headingley Campus, has refurbished its heating system using Remeha boilers.

Leeds-based heating engineers Sayes Ltd have been keeping the heating and hot water services operating reliably and efficiently across the University’s estate for several years.

When their routine condition survey revealed that the existing non-condensing boilers at Macaulay Hall were showing signs of deterioration and inefficient operation, the University moved quickly to replace the ageing plant.

For Sayes, a major challenge on the project was the basement location of the plant room. To reach it required navigating a narrow flight of stairs and a series of doorways.

“We needed to replace the old boiler plant with compact, slimline boilers that would achieve the necessary heat output and overcome the access restrictions,” said James Hanson, General Manager at Sayes.

Reliability and easy maintenance were added requirements, both for the University and Sayes, its maintenance provider.

James recommended installing two Remeha Gas 210 Eco boilers to meet these criteria. “We find Remeha boilers to be consistently reliable,” he explained. “This is matched by the good after sales and support service that they provide. The Gas 210 Eco Pro boilers are nice and narrow – this would allow us to get them into the plant room quickly and easily, without the need to break them down.”

The Gas 210 Eco Pro series is available in 80, 120 160 and 200kW outputs. Lightweight and compact, the boilers are supplied fully assembled for quick and easy installation. The ability to install them in back-to-back configurations, when space is particularly constrained, provides added flexibility in space saving design.

Macaulay Hall, like all University buildings, was empty at the time due to COVID-19 restrictions which meant that there was no need to maintain the heating service during the works.

The project went very smoothly, with the Sayes team taking just two weeks to remove the old boilers and install the new Remeha condensing boilers with a suitable flueing arrangement.

“We delivered on schedule and on budget – so all in all, a very successful project!” added James. The University is very happy with how the work has gone, and with their new, more energy-efficient boilers.

Dave Watson, Engineering Maintenance Manager at Leeds Beckett University said, “We’re delighted that we have been able to complete this boiler replacement before welcoming back our students to Macaulay Hall. We’re also anticipating welcome energy savings from our new, more efficient Remeha boilers, in the months ahead.”
